                        BENGAL GRAM CURRY/ KADALA CURRY


Kadala /Bengal gram curry is considered as one of the traditional recipe in Kerala.The main combination for this curry in Kerala is the breakfast items like Puttu, Appam.This recipe is an all time favorite for all the visitors of Kerala.Let us see how to prepare this tasty recipe.

                                                       INGREDIENTS
To Cook Bengal Gram

  • Bengal Gram/Kadala                            - 1/2 kg( soak this over night min 6-8 hrs)
  • Onion Sliced                                         - 1
  • Ginger                                                   - a small piece
  • Garlic                                                    - 10 crushed
  • Green chilies                                         - 3 slitted
  • Salt to taste
  • Water level  above the soaked gram.
Cook the ingredients in a pressure cooker.After one whistle lower the flame and cook till 30 mins.When the steam comes down open it and keep this aside.

                                     

To prepare Gravy

  • Onions sliced                   - 2
  • Tomatoes                         - 2
  • Garlic crushed                 - 2 tbsp
  • Green chilies                   - 4
  • Coriander powder          - 3 tbsp
  • Red chilly powder          - 2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder            - 1/4 tsp
  • Garam masala                 - 3/4 tsp
  • Coconut milk                  - 2 cups
  • Salt
  • Oil
To Garnish 
  • Mustard seeds
  • Red chilly 
  • Curry leaves
  • Coriander leaves

                                     METHOD

  • Slice the onions ,chop the tomatoes and keep aside.

                                      .

  • Heat a heavy bottom pan and add some oil to it.


  • Splutter mustard seeds and add red chillies to it.


  • Add curry leaves to it.


  • Add crushed garlic to it.



  • Add sliced onions to it.


  • Saute this while it becomes tender.


  • Add green chilies to it.


  • Soak the dry masala powder in water.


  • When the onions becomes light brown in color add this soaked masala gravy to it.


  • Now add tomatoes too. Let it saute for 5 mins in low flame.



  • Add little water from the cooked gram to it.Wait till it evaporates and the oil leaves out.


  • Add little salt again  to it.

                                     


  • Now add the cooked gram to it.


  • Mix well.


  • Add coconut milk to it.


  • Let it boil till oil appears on top.


                    Turn off the flame and garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot!!
