  BREAD FRUIT AND BEEF IN ROASTED COCONUT GRAVY
                         (KADACHAKKAYUM BEEFUM)




This month is a sacred one since Ramzan fast is going on for all followers.So I am preparing a traditional non veg recipe which can be easily prepared for Iftaar. Coconut roasted gravy curry is a traditional Kerala recipe. We can prepare this curry with many combinations.The most popular of these are bread fruit and prawns, bread fruit and beef, bread fruit and mutton.In Kerala we call Kadachakka for Bread Fruit.Mostly this is seen in South India.Today I am preparing this special combination of bread fruit and beef. So let us  see the preparation now.

                                            INGREDIENTS
  • Butter Fruit                             - 1/2 of this ( 500 gms)
  • Beef                                        - 400 gms cut into pieces and cooked with little meat                                                                       masala,pepper powder and salt.
  • Turmeric powder                    - 1/4 + 1/4 tsp
  • Dried coconut powdered        - 3/4 portion of a coconut
  • Shallots                                  - 5 to 6 sliced
  • Garlic                                     - 5 to 6 sliced
  • curry leaves                            - 1 sprig
  • Chilly powder                        - 2 tsp
  • Coriander powder                  - 1 tsp
  • Garam masala powder           - 1/4 tsp
  • Cumin seed powder               - a pinch
  • Water  as required
  • Salt to taste
To Garnish
  • Ginger julienne                     - 1piece
  • Shallots                                 - 1/4 cup
  • Green chilies                        -  6 to 7 slit
  • Mustard seed                        - 1/2 tsp
  • Dry red chilly                       - 3 to 4
  • Curry leaves                         - 1 sprig
  • Oil
                                              METHOD


  •  The above picture is the Bread Fruit.Some people may not know this by name Bread Fruit so I have just given a picture of this too above..


  •  Peel the outer green part, remove the center portion also and cut into pieces. Add salt and turmeric powder to it .


  •  Cook the beef as mentioned above.


  •  Add the cooked beef to the cut Bread Fruit and cook till the Bread Fruit becomes soft.


  •  Take a heavy bottom kadai and add the dried powdered coconut, shallots, garlic and curry leaves.Roast it till light brown and crispy.


  •  When it is roasted well,( this is dried coconut so do not deep fry till dark brown) add red chilly powder,coriander powder,turmeric powder, garam masala,cumin seed powder to it.


  •  Mix well and roast it for 3-4 mins more.


  •  When it is roasted well , turn off the flame and allow it to cool.


  •  When the Butter Fruit and beef get cooked well simmer the flame.


  •  Grind the coconut masala to a fine paste, if needed can add little water and grind it.


  •  Pour this paste to the cooked Bread Fruit and Beef .Add required amount of water and cook till the oil appears on the top of the sides.


  •  Keep ready all the garnish items.


  •  Pour little oil, splutter mustard seeds and add dry red chilies to it.


  •  Add curry leaves to it.


  •  Now add the ginger julienne and fry till brown.


  •  Fry the shallots and green chilies.


  •  When the shallots turn brown, turn off the flame.

  • When the oil appears on top turn off the flame and add the garnishing items.


             Serve it on a bowl and enjoy this awesome dish!!!!
